Snake Feeding Problems
A snake refusing food is one of the most common concerns reptile owners face.
Normal Reasons for Refusal
Pre-Shed
Snakes often refuse food 1-2 weeks before shedding. Their eyes turn blue and colors dull.
Brumation
In winter, snakes naturally become less active and may not eat for months.
Breeding Season
Male snakes often refuse food during breeding season.
Problematic Reasons
Improper Temperature
Snakes cannot digest food properly if their enclosure is too cool. Check your thermostat.
Stress
- Overly small enclosure
- Excessive handling
- Visibility of other pets
- Loud vibrations
Wrong Food Type
Some snakes are picky. Try:
- Different sized prey
- Pre-killed vs live
- Different protein sources (mice vs rats)
Illness
Refusal combined with these symptoms warrants a vet visit:
- Weight loss
- Mucus or bubbles from mouth
- Lethargy
- Regurgitation
Tips to Encourage Eating
- Warm the prey slightly (not hot!)
- Offer in the evening when snakes are most active
- Try “brain feeding” by puncturing the prey’s skull
- Reduce stress before offering food
- Don’t handle for 24 hours after feeding
