Emergency Warning Signs in Pets

Knowing when to rush your pet to the vet can save their life.

Absolute Emergencies (See Vet Immediately)

Difficulty Breathing

  • Gasping
  • Blue or pale gums
  • Extended neck posture
  • Noisy breathing

Severe Bleeding

  • Won’t stop with pressure
  • Bleeding from ears, nose, or mouth
  • Blood in urine or feces

Inability to Urinate

  • Especially common in male cats
  • Straining with no urine production
  • Crying when trying to urinate

Collapse or Severe Weakness

  • Non-responsive
  • Extreme lethargy
  • Can’t stand

Suspected Poisoning

  • Bring the toxin packaging if possible
  • Time is critical

Warning Signs (See Vet Within 24 Hours)

  • Refusing food for 24+ hours (cats especially)
  • Vomiting or diarrhea for more than a day
  • Limping
  • Excessive thirst or urination
  • Visible parasites

First Aid While Traveling

  1. Muzzle carefully: Even friendly pets may bite when in pain
  2. Immobilize injuries: Don’t try to reset bones
  3. Control bleeding: Direct pressure with clean cloth
  4. Keep warm: Prevent shock
  5. Call ahead: Let the emergency vet prepare for your arrival
