Puppy’s First Night Home
The first night sets the tone. Here’s how to make it easier for everyone.
Before Bedtime
Tire Them Out
A worn-out puppy sleeps better. Play, walk, but avoid over-stimulation.
Last Bathroom Trip
Take puppy out right before bed. Watch for accidents.
Feeding Schedule
Last meal 3-4 hours before bed. Prevents midnight bathroom needs.
Setting Up Their Space
Crate Placement
- Keep crate near your bedroom initially
- Dogs are den animals and feel secure enclosed
- Cover with blanket for extra coziness
Make It Appealing
- Old t-shirt with your scent
- Soft bedding
- Safe chew toy (stuffed Kong)
Nighttime Routine
- Final bathroom trip (include play to trigger bathroom)
- Place puppy in crate with treat
- Say goodnight calmly
- Ignore whining
- Wait until calm to respond
Managing the Crying
The First Few Nights Are Normal
Puppies cry because:
- They’re scared
- They’re alone for first time
- They need bathroom
DON’T:
- Take puppy out of crate when crying (teaches crying = getting out)
- Sleep next to crate (creates dependency)
- Give up on crate training
DO:
- Put crate near your bed so you can touch them
- Use a ticking clock or white noise
- Stay firm—consistency is key
Bathroom Accidents
If puppy cries to go out:
- Wait 30 seconds of calm
- Take out quietly
- Back to crate immediately
- No play or excitement
- Return to bed
When They’ll Sleep Through
Most puppies sleep through by 12-16 weeks. Until then, expect 1-2 nighttime trips.
Remember
This phase is temporary. Stay consistent and patient.
