How to Introduce a New Cat to Your Home
Proper introduction prevents behavioral problems and builds lasting feline friendships.
The 7-Day Plan
Days 1-2: Separation
Keep new cat in a separate room with food, water, and litter. Swap bedding between cats so they acclimate to each other’s scent.
Days 3-4: Door Trading
Feed both cats on opposite sides of the door. This creates positive associations with the other’s presence.
Days 5-6: Visual Introduction
Use a baby gate or cracked door. Supervise all visual contact.
Day 7+: Supervised Meetings
Allow brief, controlled meetings. Have treats ready for positive reinforcement.
Signs of Successful Introduction
- Playing together
- Grooming each other
- Sleeping near each other
- Shared food/water arrangements
When It Goes Wrong
If either cat shows aggression (hissing is normal, fighting is not), return to previous step and proceed more slowly.
