Signs of Separation Anxiety

  • Destruction when alone (especially exits)
  • Excessive barking/howling
  • House soiling
  • Drooling or panting
  • Escape attempts
  • Pacing

What’s NOT Separation Anxiety

  • Boredom (different solution)
  • Insufficient exercise
  • Lack of training
  • Urinary infections (medical)

Treatment Approaches

1. Counter-Conditioning

Create positive associations with your departure:

  1. Pick up keys, don’t leave
  2. Put on shoes, don’t leave
  3. Practice leaving for seconds, return
  4. Gradually increase duration

2. Establish Calm Departures

  • Ignore dog 15 minutes before leaving
  • Don’t make departures emotional
  • Use calm hellos and goodbyes

3. Physical Exhaustion

Before leaving:

  • 30+ minute walk or run
  • Mental stimulation (puzzle toys)
  • Play session

4. Create Safe Space

  • Crate training (if dog finds it soothing)
  • Comfort items with your scent
  • White noise or TV
  • Calming pheromone diffuser

5. Medication (Vet Consult)

For severe cases:

  • Prescription anti-anxiety medication
  • Prozac
  • Trazodone
  • CBD (discuss with vet)

What NOT To Do
