Food Allergy vs Food Intolerance

Allergy: Immune system reaction, often involves itching and skin issues

Intolerance: Digestive system reaction, causes vomiting or diarrhea

Most Common Culprits

Dogs are usually allergic to:

  1. Beef (most common)
  2. Chicken
  3. Dairy
  4. Wheat
  5. Egg
  6. Lamb
  7. Soy
  8. Corn (less common than believed)

Signs of Food Allergies

  • Chronic ear infections
  • Paw licking
  • Itchy rear end

Diagnosis: Elimination Diet

The only way to diagnose food allergies:

  1. 8-12 weeks minimum on novel protein/carb source
  2. No treats, table food, or flavored medications
  3. Must be a truly hypoallergenic diet
  4. Then reintroduce ingredients one at a time
  5. Watch for reaction

Managing Food Allergies

Once identified:
