How to Clean a Fish Tank Properly
Proper tank maintenance is the single biggest factor in fish health and longevity.
The Nitrogen Cycle
Before cleaning, understand this: your tank needs beneficial bacteria to break down ammonia from fish waste. These bacteria live in your filter and gravel—not in the water itself.
Weekly Maintenance Tasks
Partial Water Change (20-30%)
- Turn off heater and filter
- Use a gravel vacuum to remove debris
- Treat new water with dechlorinator
- Match temperature to tank water
- Slowly add new water
Filter Maintenance
- Rinse filter media in old tank water (never tap water)
- Replace filter cartridges monthly
- Don’t clean everything at once—preserve beneficial bacteria
Glass Cleaning
- Remove algae with an algae scraper
- Clean inside glass with aquarium-safe products only
Common Mistakes
❌ Changing 100% of water (shocks fish) ❌ Using soap or chemicals ❌ Cleaning filter media in hot water ❌ Overfeeding (causes ammonia spikes)
Test Your Water Weekly
Must-have parameters to monitor:
- Ammonia (should be 0)
- Nitrite (should be 0)
- Nitrate (keep below 40 ppm)
- pH (depends on fish species)
