Budgies are among the most intelligent and trainable pet birds. Here’s how to get started.

Why Train Your Budgie?

Essential First Commands

Step Up

The foundation of all bird training.

1. Present your finger or perch at chest level
2. Say “step up” in a calm voice
3. Gently push against the bird’s lower chest
4. Reward immediately with praise or a treat

Step Down

Same technique, but presented from above.

Teaching Your Budgie to Talk

1. Start with simple words: “hello,” “step up,” bird’s name
2. Repeat words clearly and frequently
3. Make eye contact during teaching
4. Reward any attempt to mimic

Male budgies are generally better talkers than females.

Training Tips

• Keep sessions short (10-15 minutes)
• Train at the same time daily
• Never punish—only reward positive behavior
• Be patient; results take time
