Why Scratching is Vital
Scratching isn’t spite; it’s health. It peels away dead nail sheaths, stretches muscles, and marks territory. You can’t stop the behavior, but you can definitely manage the target.
Step 1: The Principle of Least Resistance
Cats scratch what’s convenient. If your sofa is the most satisfying texture and placed in their favorite spot, they’ll choose it every time.
- Vertical vs. Horizontal: Does your cat reach up or stretch out? Match the scratcher to their preferred motion.
- Stability: If it wobbles, they won’t use it.
- Rougher is Better: Look for sisal or raw wood over cheap carpet remnants.
Step 2: The “Attraction” Method
Don’t just hide the sofa—make the scratcher the star.
- Use silvervine or catnip to pique initial interest.
- Place scratching posts directly next to the areas they currently target.
- Reward immediate use with treats and praise.
Step 3: Discouraging the Couch
Temporarily make the sofa “boring.” Use double-sided sticky tape or furniture guards on the specific corners they hit. They’ll quickly decide the scratcher is the better physical experience.
