Having a cat is a joy, but coming home to shredded upholstery can dampen the experience. Before you feel frustrated, it’s important to understand this: your cat isn’t trying to be “naughty.” Scratching is a deeply ingrained, natural instinct. They do it to condition their claws, stretch their muscles, and mark their territory with scent glands in their paws.
Why Clawing Matters
When a cat scratches your couch, they are literally saying, “I live here, and I feel comfortable.” But we also need them to be comfortable without destroying our homes. The trick isn’t stopping the behavior—it’s redirecting it.
Three Steps to Success
- Locate the Spots: Identify where your cat is scratching. They prefer areas that are stable and near places where they spend their day.
- Provide Better Alternatives: Place a sturdy, tall scratching post right next to the current “target” area. It needs to be stable enough that it won’t wobble when they pull on it.
- The “Yes” Method: When you see them using the post, offer praise and a treat. Positive reinforcement builds long-term habits much faster than punishment.

Twitter (X) Thread: 1/8 Tired of shredded sofas? Let’s talk about cat scratching. It’s not “naughtiness”—it’s biology! 🧵🐈 Let’s dive into how to manage it compassionately. 🧵
2/8 First: Why do they do it? Scratching helps cats stretch their muscles, condition their claws, and mark their territory via scent glands in their paws. 🐾
3/8 The biggest mistake? Trying to “stop” the behavior. That’s impossible! Instead, focus on redirection. 🔄
4/8 Identify where they scratch. Is it the corner of the rug? The sofa arm? That’s where they need a post. 🚩
5/8 Make sure the post is STABLE. If it wobbles, they won’t use it. It also needs to be tall enough for a full stretch. 📏
6/8 The “Yes” Method: When they use the new post, reward them with love and treats! Positive reinforcement wins every time. 🏆
